Tim Ahfeldt, PhD

Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, NY

Tim Ahfeldt, PhD, is an assistant professor in the Nash Family Department of Neuroscience and Neurology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. He received his PhD from the University of Hamburg after training in Prof. Cowan’s laboratory at MGH/Harvard University, followed by postdoctoral studies in stem cell biology and neurodegenerative disease modeling at the Rubin lab/Harvard University. Dr. Ahfeldt has been involved in expanding the technical repertoire of human pluripotent stem cell culture during a time of rapid advancement of the field. He contributed pioneering work developing methods to generate and genetically manipulate induced pluripotent stem cells. His lab is focused on the application of genome editing technologies such as CRISPR Cas9 or CasRX to create next-generation models of neurodegenerative diseases, investigate the underlying pathological mechanisms, increase the accuracy and precision of diagnosis, and establish a framework for new innovative therapeutic strategies.
