Anthony Schapira, MD

Anthony Schapira, MD, DSc, FRCP, FMedSci, was appointed in 1990 as chairman of the University Department of Clinical Neurosciences at the UCL Queen Square Institute of Neurology, and professor of neurology at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery and the Royal Free Hospital, London, UK. He is currently chair of the Department of Clinical and Movement Neurosciences at UCL.

His research interests include the molecular and clinical aspects of Parkinson’s disease and other movement disorders. He leads a large basic science and clinical translation program on glucocerebrosidase in Parkinson’s disease. He has over 450 peer-reviewed publications with a H-index of 97 (Web of Science), and is on the 2018 list of the world’s most Highly Cited Researchers (Clarivate).

Dr. Schapira was elected a fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences in 1999 and appointed a senior investigator at the National Institutes of Health in 2012. He was editor-in-chief of the European Journal of Neurology from 2006 to 2019.
