Training Resources

At the Aligning Science Across Parkinson’s (ASAP) initiative, we are committed to establishing a strong, diverse, and global pipeline of the next generation of Parkinson’s disease researchers with the tools and infrastructure to address priority questions in Parkinson’s disease.

Our Approach to Training

We support the next generation of Parkinson’s disease researchers through three major pathways:

  • Professional development opportunities
  • Funding opportunities
  • Family care support

GP2 Training and Workshops

GP2 offers free online training courses and in-person training opportunities to develop skills on a range of topics related to Parkinson’s disease genetics. Virtual courses are accessible to all and available in multiple languages through an online learning system.

GP2 Master’s and PhD Programs

GP2 supports opportunities for individuals who identify as belonging to an underrepresented group to receive funding to obtain a PhD or MSc in the genetics of Parkinson’s disease or a related subject.

Write Now Initiative

The Parkinson’s Progressive Markers Initiative (PPMI) Write Now Initiative supports the analysis of PPMI results by early-career investigators. Awardees are paired with mentors from the PPMI leadership team and the statistical support team to encourage engagement with PPMI study data to analyze and improve the overall understanding of the pathophysiology and/or treatment of Parkinson’s disease. Applications are accepted annually.

Care & Career Program

ASAP launched the Care & Career program in 2023 to help offset growing costs and pressures related to family care among researchers engaged in ASAP’s Collaborative Research Network. The program provides eligible recipients with a stipend of up to $10,000 that can be applied to healthcare, education, daycare, or other general living expenses related to caring for and raising children. In 2024, the program was expanded to also cover costs related to elder care and researchers affiliated with PPMI. To date, ASAP has dispersed almost $3.2 million in stipends.

Our Research Community

We currently support three programs with the goal of advancing research for the benefit of the entire Parkinson’s disease community, and are a member of various consortia to accelerate scientific advances.
