Protocols

As part of the Aligning Science Across Parkinson’s (ASAP) initiative’s commitment to open science, it is important to us that ASAP-funded work can be leveraged by the research community. One way we ensure this is by making the experimental methods that comprise ASAP-funded work are replicable through protocol sharing.

Our Approach to Protocol Replicability

In an effort to improve the replicability of ASAP-funded research, we require all grantees to share a protocol or Methods paper for every Methods section in a manuscript. An assessment of protocol sharing in ASAP-funded publications showed that the policy’s implementation led to improved protocol sharing at the time of publication.

ASAP Community on Protocols.io

ASAP grantees are encouraged to deposit their recipe-style protocols in a public repository. Since ASAP’s inception, over 1,800 protocols have been made publicly available through protocols.io, comprising over 5% of the protocols in this database. Engagement with these outputs is high, with some protocols ranked in the top 100 most-viewed on the site (over 6,000 views) and others actively receiving multiple bookmarks from users.

PPMI Study Design

The Parkinson’s Progression Markers Initiative (PPMI) is a landmark observational study dedicated to understanding Parkinson's disease. The PPMI Clinical protocol is designed to acquire comprehensive longitudinal within-participant data in approximately 4,000 participants enrolled at about 50 sites worldwide.

Protocols in the ASAP Catalog

Our initiative is accelerating the pace of discovery for Parkinson’s disease through collaboration, research-enabling resources, and data sharing. Browse our Catalog to view all ASAP-supported protocols.
